The hydropower plant Wuskwatim , Eng. Wuskwatim Generating Station , is a hydroelectric power station in the central north of the Canadian province of Manitoba . The power station is 45 km southwest of Thompson on the Burntwood River , 170 km above its confluence with Split Lake . It is operated by Manitoba Hydro , the provincial public utility company.

history

The hydropower plant was built between 2006 and 2012. Project developers and owners is the Wuskwatim Power Limited Partnership (WPLP) , a joint venture of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation (NCN) and Manitoba Hydro. The power plant was opened on July 5, 2012 by Greg Selinger , then Prime Minister of Manitoba. The project costs at this point totaled 1.37 billion Canadian dollars (about 1 billion euros).

location

The hydropower plant is located at the southern end of Wuskwatim Lake , the area of which increased by 37 hectares due to the damming . The Burntwood River left the lake at the site of today's power station via what was then Taskinigup Falls . Below the power station, the Burntwood River flows through the smaller Opegano Lake and Birch Tree Lake before passing the town of Thompson. The power plant is connected to Provincial Road 391 by a 48 km long gravel road.

Data

Wuskwatim is currently the only hydroelectric power station on the Burntwood River. Since 1976/77, about 60 percent of the Churchill River's water volume has been fed to the Nelson River via the Rat River and Burntwood River as part of the Churchill River Diversion . A discharge control structure at Notigi regulates the inflow. The power plant operators have u. a. as a requirement that the (daily) water level fluctuations above and below the power plant are within specified tolerances (25 cm at the upstream Wuskwatim Lake ).

The crown length is about 690 m. It lies at a height of 236.7  m . The power station measures 75 m, the flood relief next to it is 43 m wide. The power station house houses three turbines (vertical propeller type) with an installed capacity of 211 MW. The annual energy production in 2013 was 1488 million kWh. The fall height is 21.4 m. The water level at the power plant inlet is 233.9  m . The extended flow rate is 1100 m³ / s. The flood relief is designed for 2310 m³ / s.
