He represents the constituency of Saint-Boniface in the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba .

biography

Selinger grew up in Saskatchewan Province and moved to Winnipeg with his single mother , where she ran a small fashion store. He graduated from the University of Manitoba and Queen's College . His Ph.D. he did at the London School of Economics . He then worked as an assistant professor in the Department of Social Work at the University of Manitoba.

In 1989, Selinger was elected to the provincial capital's city council as a candidate for the left-wing progressive electoral association Winnipeg into the '90s , where he chaired the finance commission. In 1992 he ran for mayor and came in second. In the 1999 elections to the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba, he stood for the NDP and was elected by a large margin in Saint-Boniface. Prime Minister Gary Doer named him provincial treasury secretary. During his ten-year tenure, Selinger managed to balance the budget every year. In 2003 and 2007 he was re-elected with over 70% of the vote.

On September 8, 2009 Selinger resigned as finance minister and announced that he would run for chairman of the NDP. At the party meeting on October 17, 2009, he prevailed with almost two thirds of the delegate's votes and was elected Doer's successor. Two days later he took over the post of head of government from him. In the elections on October 4, 2011, the NDP was able to keep its number of seats and Selinger was confirmed as Prime Minister. The election in April 2016, however, brought the NDP a defeat, whereupon Brian Pallister of the Progressive Conservative Party took over as Prime Minister. The party chairmanship fell provisionally to Flor Marcelino . Selinger initially remained a member of parliament, but then announced his retirement from politics in February 2018.
