Manitoba Hydro is a utility company headquartered in Winnipeg , Manitoba , Canada . It was founded in 1961 and is owned by the Province of Manitoba. The company employs around 6,200 people and operates 15 power plants. It supplies 527,000 customers with electricity and 263,000 customers with natural gas. Since 2009, the head office has been Manitoba Hydro Place, opened in 2009 . Manitoba Hydro exports electrical energy to the neighboring Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Ontario as well as North Dakota and Minnesota in the United States .

As a network operator from Manitoba Hydro in addition to a natural gas network and an extended three-phase high-voltage transmission network with more than 9000 km of cable length (transport network) as well as high-voltage direct current -Leitung (HVDC) executed and nearly 1000 km long Nelson-River- Bipol operated. This line transports electrical energy from the sparsely populated north of Manitoba to the more densely populated region around Winnipeg.

history

The first electrical supply in Winnipeg began on March 12, 1873. The benefits of electrical supply were demonstrated on a building known as the Davis House Hotel , located on Main Street. In 1880 the Manitoba Electric and Gas Light Company was founded.

Manitoba Hydro operates primarily hydro, steam and wind farms. The company does not operate a nuclear power plant, but has a nuclear power plant for research purposes.
