Churchill River Diversion - location sketch |
The Burntwood River is a 355 km long left tributary of the Nelson River in the Canadian province of Manitoba .
The Burntwood River forms the outflow of the approximately 280 m high Burntwood Lake . This is in the area of the Canadian Shield almost 60 km north of Snow Lake . The Burntwood River leaves the lake at its eastern end. Initially it flows 30 km in a north-northeast direction. Then it flows mainly in an easterly direction. After 100 km of flow, the river turns north-northeast and after another 30 km reaches Threepoint Lake . The Rat River flows into this from the north . Because of the Churchill River Diversion , an average of 762 m³ / s have been diverted from the Churchill River into the Rat River since 1976/77 . This increases the amount of water in the lower reaches of the Burntwood River by almost eight times. The mean discharge at gauge 05TG001 near Thompson increased from 112 m³ / s (1958/1975) to 874 m³ / s (1978/2016). Below Threepoint Lake, the Burntwood River flows through the smaller Kinosaskaw Lake and turns south. The Wuskwatim hydropower plant is located on the southern bank of Wuskwatim Lake . Below this, the Burntwood River flows mainly in an east-northeast direction. It flows through the smaller lakes Opegano Lake and Birch Tree Lake . The small town of Thompson is located 110 km above the mouth on the south bank of the river. The Provincial Road 391 crosses the river at this point. This finally flows into the western end of Split Lake . The natural catchment area of the Burntwood River covers approximately 22,500 km².
