History of the castle

Castle chapel

The first mentions of the castle probably go back to Charlemagne , who in 791 and 802 a donation from Duke Tassilo III. 777 to the monastery Kremsmünster confirmed: Mentioned is the area luibilinpach , a festival and the seat of Weyer . After that, the Counts of Wels-Lambach seem to have appropriated the property. In 1140 Benedikta von Julbach gave her property in Leombach again to the Kremsmünster monastery. Leombach is attested as a castle with the naming of Walchun von Leubenbach in 1213. In 1360 it was referred to as a fortress and given to Chunrad Klingenfurtner as a fief. Eberhard V. von Walsee bought Leombach from Klingenfurtner and gave it to his chamberlain Hans Meurl , who was enfeoffed with the moated castle by the Kremsmünster monastery in 1380. In 1462 there was a feudal confirmation for the Meuerl with the "Geslos Leubenbach". In 1514 Bernhard Meurl sold the castle to Georg Sigharter , in 1592 it was bequeathed to Christoph von Schallenberg . The Schallenbergers remained in possession until 1702 and expanded the castle into a moated castle. Friedrich von Eyselsberg acquired the rule from the legacy of Count Christof Ehrenreich von Schallenberg. In 1710 the castle came back into the possession of the Kremsmünster monastery.

Leombach Castle was a large moated castle for a long time, which was converted into a moated castle in the 17th century. From there a dam with a driveway led to the group of houses at Leombach Castle. A two-storey longitudinal building stood with the castle chapel on an island in the surrounding pond. On the left side there was a tower, whereby the roof of the tower merged into that of the building next to it. There used to be a barn and a brick shed that formed the palace area. A dam ran beyond it to intercept the surrounding pond.

present

Only a pond in front of the former longitudinal tract reminds of this past of the former moated castle. The longitudinal wing has been modernized and converted into apartments. The castle chapel has been preserved, which looks in need of renovation. Row houses have been built on the drained grounds of the castle. The palace area can be entered, but the palace chapel is locked.

The former castle tavern is still an inn located next to the Kremsmünster - Sipbachzell - Wels road.
