Around 1340 the fort-like castle with four round towers , curtain walls , moat and gate tower was renovated. In the 16th century the castle was the Renaissance - castle with bastions and redoubts expanded and served as the official residence of the light bergischen administrators. After the Kehl Fortress was built, the Willstätter Bastion became obsolete and the castle was destroyed in 1689. In 1697 the area of the former castle was built over.
