The Bad Schwartau water tower is located in Bad Schwartau in Schleswig-Holstein - just a few meters from the A1 motorway . The tower is a listed building and is one of the landmarks of Bad Schwartau.

Building

The 34 m high water tower was built from red brick in 1910 . The shaft tapers upwards. Its masonry is interrupted by a few narrow, arched windows. At the top is a wreath of rectangular fields, four of which contain a small window, while the others are plastered. The protruding masonry surrounding the water tank is reinforced with iron framework . Narrow windows are set in four of the middle compartments. At the top, the tower is closed by a conical roof with a lantern on which four small dormers are placed.

A loft container with a capacity of 200 m³ served as a reservoir. There was no overflow pipe, only two pipes connected the water network to the water tank. An iron staircase inside led to the drip floor.

History of the water supply in Bad Schwartau

The small community of Schwartau had already developed into a climatic health resort before 1900 . In 1912 it became a town and in 1913 it was recognized as a state spa. The up-and-coming town planned to set up a central water supply from 1909 , which in 1910 led to the commissioning of a waterworks with a water tower. Initially only 220 households were supplied, but the supply network grew continuously. In 1925 there were already 500 house connections, in 1933 the number increased to 900. Two new wells had to be drilled, otherwise no extensions were necessary, as the system was very generously dimensioned from the start.

After the Second World War , the population of Bad Schwartau doubled from 8,000 to 16,000 as a result of the influx of refugees. Major modernizations of the water supply were necessary. But it wasn't until 1972 that the city built a completely new waterworks. In 2009, the pipe network covers 75.9 km with 4,808 house connections.

Decommissioning and further use

The new waterworks, built in 1972, had a hydrophore system that enabled a constant supply pressure even without an elevated tank. This made the water tower superfluous and was shut down in 1974. After various utilization projects had failed, the Schwartauer Werke acquired the building in 1986, which was placed under monument protection that same year. The company restored the tower in accordance with its heritage and uses the premises as an archive from now on.
