Bürrig water tower

The Leverkusen-Bürrig water tower is the water tower of Energieversorgung Leverkusen (EVL) in the Bürrig district and at the same time a widely visible “landmark” of Leverkusen . The goals of the builders were a guaranteed constant water pressure for the city and the ability to be prepared for peak consumption.

The location at today's Olof-Palme-Straße was selected by the Leverkusener Stadtwerke in March 1973. The water tower was commissioned in 1975 and construction began in July 1975. The tower was constructed using a sliding construction method; In the course of the construction work, 3,000 m³ of reinforced concrete, 500 tons of steel and 12,500 m² of cladding were used. The tower was completed at the end of 1977 and opened in the summer of 1978. Since its completion, the tallest structure in Leverkusen at 72.45 meters with its container diameter of 42 meters has also served as a viewing platform; Plans for a tower restaurant were never realized.

The water tower was renovated for the first time in 1993: new roof insulation, new aluminum cladding and a service system were installed. In 1999, the tower cup was redesigned to look like a compass. The Leverkusen architect Eberhard Foest provided the artistic design.

As part of the State Garden Show 2005, the logo of the show was installed below the tower cup. Following the garden show, this was replaced by the EVL logo.

The 40th birthday of the Leverkusen-Bürrig water tower was celebrated on July 1, 2018 with a "water tower birthday party".

The shaft has a diameter of 8 meters. The two separate chambers have a total capacity of 4000 m³. The construction costs amounted to approx. DM 5 million. From above, visitors can enjoy an all-round bird's eye view of Leverkusen, the grounds of the State Garden Show 2005 (Neuland Park since 2006) and the neighboring city of Cologne or, if visibility is good, even as far as the Siebengebirge near Bonn .

After one and a half years of closure for renovation work , the water tower was reopened to the public at the beginning of the state horticultural show.

A new elevator, more platforms for the view and orientation boards are available to visitors. A new exhibition in the tower provides information about Leverkusen, the state horticultural show and the EVL utility company .

Even before the renovation, the view from the tower was appreciated: between 2000 and 2003, up to 2500 guests visited this viewing platform every year.

At Christmas time , the top is decorated in the form of a Christmas tree and illuminated with vertical fairy lights.

Markings on its top make it the largest compass in the world.

Trivia

The water tower is mentioned in the Bayer 04 Leverkusen fan anthem.
