Building history

Planning and construction

Detail of the facade of the spiral staircase

The planning for a drinking water tower, which began before the outbreak of the First World War , aimed to secure the independence of the Steglitz community. Presumably, the water tower with its Klönne container was never used to supply the population with water because Steglitz was connected to the water supply network of the Berlin municipal waterworks shortly after its completion . Architecturally, the huge rotunda made of red bricks corresponds to the style of the emerging brick expressionism . The builder Schwenke and the mason Wilhelm Reiche were involved in its construction.

Remodeling work

The water tower has been changed several times to fulfill new functions:

  • 1923: Urn hall ( columbarium ), later cessation of work
  • 1926: Installation of a new water tank
  • 1927: Start of renovation work as a blessing and urn hall, with an extension as a crematorium
  • 1928: Commissioning of the water tower as a reservoir for Steglitz and Schöneberg
  • 1932: Conversion work ceased in 1927
  • 1935: new conversions to a "memorial for the fallen of World War I and the movement"
  • 1936: Inauguration of the memorial
  • 1941: Fire in the hall of honor due to an air raid during World War II
  • 1943: Destruction of the water tank by an air raid
  • 1945: Demolition of the destroyed hall of honor
  • 1950: Repair of the damage to the water tower
  • 1962: The water tower was shut down
