Steyr water tower
The Steyr water tower with extension (intermediate bridges 3) was built in 1572–1574 and served to supply the town square with water .
history
In the water tower (also Ennsturm) built by Michael Aidn for the city from 1572 to 1574, a water reservoir was housed. This was filled with river water by a pumping station driven by a water wheel in the Steyr and supplied the Neptune and Poseidon fountains on the town square . The bell founder Dominik Staffelmayr replaced the old pumping station with a new, simpler construction in 1824, and in 1864 the tower was given a new sheet metal covering. From 1875, the owner was Ludwig Werndl , who acquired the tower, the pump room and the attached house for 11,000 fl . In 1909 the building was already very dilapidated and the weapons factory company did not want to maintain it, but only to finance the demolition. An intervention by the Central Commission for Monument Preservation prevented the demolition. Instead, only the tower, which had already tilted up to 32 cm, was shortened by 8 meters. The pumping station was in operation until 1948. In the 1960s, the entire ensemble in intermediate bridges was temporarily to be demolished to make room for new, larger bridges. However, this was discarded and instead the tower and the neighboring objects 1 and 2 (Fischergschirr) were renovated in 1974/75.
Iron panther
The iron panther on the south facade is a war nailing (defense shield) from 1915. The wooden model into which the nails were hammered comes from Leo Zimpel . The income was 7,000 crowns . The dedication plaque below reads: From our struggle / In distress and pain / Wear customer / In distant days / Panther in ore! The founder is the women-and-girls-local group Südmark .
