The Siegen Wittgenstein Water Association (WVSW) is a water and soil association . Its members are the municipalities and districts in the association area. He ensures the provision of drinking water and flood protection .

Foundation and history

The association was founded on September 9, 1953 as the Siegerland water association due to a water shortage in the Siegerland. At first it extended to the Hilchenbach-Kreuztal-Freudenberg area. The first task of the association was the construction of the Breitenbach dam near Hilchenbach with the associated transport network. The increasing demand for water and the dry years of 1957 and 1959 made it clear that a safe drinking water supply was only possible over a large area. Therefore, by the end of the 1960s, the usual municipalities of the then district of Siegen also joined the water association. In 1972 the Obernaut dam was put into operation. 1972/73, the cities joined Bad Laasphe ,Bad Berleburg and the Erndtebrück water procurement association join the WVS (Siegen-Wittgenstein Water Association). With the regional reform in 1975, the supply area of the WVS finally became congruent with the Siegen-Wittgenstein district, and it also supplies water to Biedenkopf and Breidenbach in Hesse. In 2001 the name of the association was changed to Wasserverband Siegen-Wittgenstein . In addition to the dams and the treatment plant in Dreis-Tiefenbach , as well as several pumping stations and elevated tanks, the water association also operates water extraction systems, some of which were operated by the member communities themselves until the 1970s.

The dressing area includes the in North Rhine-Westphalia located Siegen-Wittgenstein , and the city of Biedenkopf, and the community of Breidenbach in neighboring Hesse. Of the around 16 million cubic meters of water that Siegen-Wittgenstein needs annually, around 85% are provided from the two dams in the district, the rest is obtained from groundwater.
