Until the end of the 19th century, the city of Worms got its drinking water from the Rhine . In 1934 Bürstadt was also connected to the plant's water supply. The waterworks fed the Worms water tower until 1962 .

Every well is equipped with manipulation sensors so that an unauthorized opening of a well would result in the immediate, fully automated shutdown of the waterworks.
