Vasily Petrovich Prince Obolenski ( Russian Василий Петрович Оболенский ; January 5, 1780 , † 1834 ) was a major general of the Russian Empire and holder of the Prussian order Pour le Mérite .

Life and family background

Vasily belonged to the Russian princely family Obolenski , who descended in a straight line from the founder of the Russian state; Rjurik , Prince of Novgorod, who died in 879 . Obolenskis lineage went in the 11th generation via the Grand Duke of Chernigov and Kiev , Michail Vsevolodowitsch, fallen in 1246, to the boyar Semyon Obolensky, documented 1446-1452.

Vasily Obolensky was born on January 5, 1780. His parents were the Imperial Russian Councilor Peter Obolensky (1742-1822) and Katharina Vjasemski (1731-1811). Vasily Obolensky died on February 5, 1834. He was married to Katharina Mussin-Pushkin (1786–1875).

Military career

Vasily Petrovich Obolensky chose the officer profession . According to his noble origins, he joined the Russian army with the cavalry and advanced quickly. As a Cossack officer he took part in the Russian campaigns against Napoleon Bonaparte and was not only the wing adjutant of Emperor Alexander I , but also the regimental commander. In 1813 he was colonel and leader of the 3rd Ukrainian Cossack Regiment, which fought against the French in Silesia under the command of Gebhard Leberecht von Blüchers and defeated the Napoleonic troops in numerous skirmishes and in the Battle of the Katzbach and displaced them from Silesia. In the battle near Goldberg , Prince Obolenski distinguished himself in such a way that he was proposed for the award of the order Pour le Mérite . After the war, Obolensky continued to serve and made it to the position of Imperial Russian Major General. His son Alexei Wassilijewitsch Obolensky (1819-1884) became a Russian general of the artillery and senator.
