The Wassmer WA-28 Espadon ( German  swordfish ) is a single-seat glider from the French manufacturer Wassmer Aviation . It is a further development of the WA-26 model and aerodynamically largely identical to it. In contrast to the WA-26, however, it is made entirely of GRP .

History and construction

After the technology of gliders with wooden wings was considered obsolete, Wassmer developed the WA-28 from the WA-26, which is aerodynamically identical but made entirely of GRP . The wings are equipped with Schempp-Hirth - air brakes fitted. The WA-28 is 20 to 25 kilograms heavier than the WA-26 and has a glide ratio of 38 at a speed of 90 km / h. It had its first flight in May 1974 and from November 1974 it was built in series. Twenty copies had been ordered by spring 1975.

The straight wings of the high- wing aircraft taper only slightly in the central part, which makes up about 60% of the wingspan. The outer wings taper more. The wings have a V-position over their entire length . The ailerons are located on the outer part of the wings.

The aircraft has a single retractable wheel that can be braked hydraulically and a small rigid tail spur. The pilot's seat is in a semi-recumbent position under a long canopy that opens to port.
