The Wassmer WA-26 Squale ( German  Hai ) is a single-seat competition glider made by the French manufacturer Wassmer Aviation in the 1960s. The wings are made of wood and have a span of 15 meters. The hull is made of GKF .

History and construction

From 1956 until at least 1964 Wassmer built the WA-20 series models with great success . These consist of wooden wings with NACA profiles and a tubular steel frame, which was initially completely covered with fabric and later covered with a combination of fabric covering and GRP . The WA-26 was an attempt by Wassmer to enter the high-performance sailplane market. Like the aircraft of the WA-20 series, they are equipped with wooden wings, but they have a Wortmann profile. The fuselage has a more aerodynamic shape and is made entirely of GRP.

The straight wings of the high- wing aircraft taper only slightly in the central part, which makes up about 60% of the wingspan. The outer wings taper more. The wings have a V-position over their entire length . The ailerons are located on the outer part of the wings. There are air brakes on the outer wing trailing edges . The wings consist of a single spar made of wood with wooden frames and are planked with 2.3 mm thick plywood .

The straight tapered pendulum rudder of the WA-26 is also made of wood and has a front edge covered with plywood and a fabric-covered rear part. The tail unit is mounted on top of the fuselage. Since the early models lacked feedback from the elevator, the WA-20M version was fitted with Flettner flaps . Vertical tail and rudder are also made of GRP.

The aircraft has a single retractable wheel that can be braked hydraulically and a small rigid tail spur. The pilot's seat is in a semi-recumbent position under a long canopy that opens to port.

The WA-26 had its maiden flight on July 21, 1967. Sales began in 1968 and in 1970 85 copies had already been ordered.
