Wassyl Andrijowytsch Symonenko ( Ukrainian Василь Андрійович Симоненко ; born January 8, 1935 in Bijiwzi , Poltava Oblast , Ukrainian SSR ; † December 13, 1963 in Cherkassy , Ukrainian SSR) was a Ukrainian poet, writer and journalist.

Life

Wassyl Symonenko studied journalism at the University of Kiev from 1952 to 1957 . From 1957 he wrote for the cultural section of the Cherkaska Pravda newspaper and from 1960 onwards he was the editor-in-chief of the propaganda department of the Molod Cherkashchyny newspaper . In 1962 he published a collection of poems in his first book "Tysha i Hrim" (Eng. Calm and thunder ). In 1963, already suffering from kidney cancer, he published another (censored) collection of poems in his second book "Zemné tyazhinnya" (Eng. Earth attraction ).

The diary of his last year was circulated under the title "Okraitsy Dumok Shchodennyk" (Eng. Fragments of Thought ) and an uncensored collection of his poems with a foreword by Ivan Switlychnyj as samizdat .

Honors

In 1987 the Writers' Union of Ukraine founded a literary prize named after Symonenko for young poets. The Ukrainian Post issued a postage stamp in 2008 and the National Bank of Ukraine issued him a two hryvnia commemorative coin with his portrait in 2008 . Museums about him and his work have been set up in Cherkassy and the house where he was born. In 1995 he was posthumously awarded the Taras Shevchenko Prize .

Film adaptation of Wassyl Symonenko's work

The Ukrainian director Oleksandr Scherebko and Anhelina Djatlowa created a film adaptation of the poetry You Didn't Come to Me from a Fairy Tale or a Dream ( Ти до мене прийшла не із казки чи сну ) by Wassyl Symonenko.
