Wat Lum Mahachai Chumphon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wat Lum Mahachai Chumphon ( Thai วัด ลุ่ม มหาชัย ชุมพล ) is a Buddhist temple complex ( Wat ) and is located on Taksin Road ( ถนน ตากสิน ) in the middle of Rayong , not far from the bank of the Rayong River.

Wat Lum Mahachai Chumphon is particularly notable for the shrine to the great King Taksin ( ศาล สมเด็จ พระเจ้าตากสิน - Saan Somdet Phra Chao Taksin ), who reestablished the Ayutthaya Empire between 1767 and 1782 after it was destroyed by the Burmese. Taksin is highly venerated by the locals, especially those of Chinese descent, as his father was of Chinese descent and therefore not noble at the time. On his march through the remnants of the Ayutthaya Empire, he gathered many soldiers to rebel against the Burmese rule. The shrine is built on the spot where he and his troops took a rest. The statue shows the king with a long sword.

Many thousands regularly gather here for the Chinese New Year .

In front of the shrine is a tall mimosa plant (Parkieae) to which Taksin's elephant was allegedly tied while he was resting.
