Watamu is a town on the Indian Ocean on Turtle Bay in Kenya , 30 kilometers south of the city of Malindi .

The sea section of Watamu is the Watamu Marine National Reserve and, together with the 219 km² Malindi Marine National Park, forms one of the larger Kenyan biosphere reserves and part of a United Nations Biosphere Reserve . The marine national park is also known for three larger caves.

The mangrove similar flooding level of the Mida Creek precedes the island Whale Iceland , where flamingos and numerous migratory species such as plovers , beach runners, Crab Plover , Scharlachspint , Madagaskarspint , terns can be observed (roseate tern, Zügelseeschwalbe). The bay of Watamu is home to manta rays , whale sharks , dolphins and turtles .

The place itself has about 5000 inhabitants and consists of some hotel complexes and resorts as well as larger private residential complexes of Europeans.
