Wataru Yoshizumi ( Japanese 吉 住 渉 Yoshizumi Wataru ; actually Mariko Nakai ( 中 井 真 里 子 , Nakai Mariko ); born June 18, 1963 in Tokyo Prefecture , Japan ) is a Japanese manga artist .

Life

After completing her degree in economics at Hitotsubashi University , she initially worked as an office lady and published manga on the side. Her first work, the short story Radical Romance , appeared in 1984 in the manga magazine Ribon Original , a sister magazine of Ribon . Both are published by the Shūeisha publishing house. Since then, Yoshizumi has mainly worked for the ribon , which is aimed at girls of elementary and middle school age, i.e. specializes in shōjo mangas.

This was followed by other short stories and in 1988 her first book publication with Shijūsō Game , which contains two other short mangas in addition to the eponymous story. The draftsman's first lengthy work was A Handsome Girl . It was published in Ribon from November 1988 to January 1992 and is about a fourteen-year-old actress who falls in love with a young director who she can't stand. The relationship comedy, comprising nine anthologies, was implemented as a radio play and in 1991 as an anime in the form of a one-part original video animation .

The breakthrough in Japan and internationally came for the author with the manga series Marmalade Boy, which consists of around 1,400 pages in eight volumes, about a young person whose parents separate but continue to live together in one apartment. The girl then meets her new stepbrother and falls in love with him. Marmalade Boy , which was published in Ribon from May 1992 to October 1995 , was a huge success with over 8.5 million anthologies sold, a 76-part anime television series and translations in several languages. In Ribon they also published several other series. From 1996 to 1997 Kimi shika iranai , from May 1997 to January 2000 the approximately 950-page Mint na Bokura , from 2000 to 2001 Random Walk and from January 2002 to December 2003 Ultra Maniac . Ultra Maniac was also released as an original video animation in 2002 and an anime television series in 2003. It's about a shy middle school student who befriends a girl of the same age who is secretly a witch.

While all of the mangas she had published up to then were aimed at young girls, in 2006 Yoshizumi drew Cherish, her first Josei manga, which was aimed at adult women . This appeared in the Chorus magazine, for which other Ribon artists like her friend Miho Obana had previously created comics.

Egmont Manga & Anime published Marmalade Boy and A Handsome Girl in Germany.

Since 2007 Tokyopop has published other series by Wataru Yoshizumi.
