history

WatchGuard Technologies was founded in February 1996 by Christopher Slatt and Steven Moore under the name Seattle Software Labs. In March 1996 Mazama Software Labs and its head David Bonn, a developer of firewall solutions on Linux basis, were taken over. This merger resulted in the company's first prototype, the Firebox firewall appliance . It was featured in Network Computing magazine in September 1996.

The first production model, the Firebox 10, was presented just two months later. With the Firebox 10, the company's sales rose from US $ 331,000 in 1996 to US $ 5.1 million in 1997.

At the beginning of 1997, the company was renamed WatchGuard Technologies after the entry of several venture capitalists.

In 1999, Watchguard went public on the US technology exchange NASDAQ , the shares were listed under the symbol WGRD.

In October 2006 private equity firms Francisco Partners and Vector Capital took over the company for $ 151 million and took it off the stock exchange.

In June 2020, Watchguard took over the Spanish security software company Panda Security .
