Waterloo is a city in Sierra Leone . It belongs to the Western Area and is 30 kilometers south-southeast of Freetown at the entrance to the Freetown Peninsula . It is the administrative center of the Western Area Rural District .
Temne , Krios and Limba mainly live in Waterloo . In 1963 3215 inhabitants were counted, in 1974 there were 4276 and 1985 9878. With the 2004 census, about 34,000 inhabitants were counted.
history
The place was founded by freed slaves in the early 19th century. The city was fiercely fought over during the civil war. At the end of 1998 it was the last outpost for government soldiers and ECOMOG troops outside the capital. It was completely destroyed and taken by the Revolutionary United Front rebels at the end of the year.
