The Waulkmill Glen Reservoir is a reservoir in the Scottish Council Area East Renfrewshire . With Newton Mearns in the east, Barrhead in the west and the southern foothills of Glasgow in the north, it is in the triangle of three cities. The M77 passes the lake to the east. lake

When fully filled, the Waulkmill Glen Reservoir has a surface area of around 0.19 km² and can hold around 1,034,000 m³ of water. The lake is 90 m above sea level and is a maximum of 710 m long and 400 m wide.

Building

The reservoir was built in 1847 and 1848. Together with the neighboring reservoirs Ryat Linn Reservoir , Balgray Reservoir and Littleton Reservoir , the Waulkmill Glen Reservoir should ensure the water supply for the southern districts of Glasgow. The inflow was once the Brock Burn , which was led past all lakes and could be branched off via respective locks. Today the Waulkmill Glen Reservoir is no longer directly connected to the Brock Burn and is filled via the Ryat Linn Reservoir to the south.

The outflow of the lake is set up in an octagonal tower near the west bank. This is possibly the oldest structure of its kind in Scotland. The tower, built in the Italian style from sandstone , has elongated arched windows and ends with a slate-covered tent roof . It is connected to the bank by a footbridge. From the tower, the water flows under the dam into equalization basins and is fed into the raw water supply system via filter systems. In addition to other external buildings, the list of monuments explicitly mentions the artificial dam section in the northeast of the lake. This is about 180 m long and consists of stone-reinforced earth that was sealed with clay. It is about 19 meters high and four meters wide at the crown.
