Wayne Yearwood (born September 22, 1964 in Montreal ) is a Canadian basketball coach and former player.

Life

The 2.03-meter-long winger was a member of the West Virginia University basketball team  in the United States from 1984 to 1987 . In the 1986/87 game year, the Canadian was the university team's top scorer (12.9 points / game). In 1987 he participated with the Canadian student selection in the Summer Universiade , he was also a member of Canada's national team, which reached sixth place at the 1988 Summer Olympics . Yearwood scored an average of 10.5 points per game over the course of the tournament. Also in 1988 he was convicted of drug possession and the intention to sell the intoxicants.

1989/90 he was under contract with Apollon Patras in Greece , 1990/91 Yearwood played in the same country with Panathinaikos Athens . The Canadian, best known for his attacking achievements, accepted a contract offer from the German Bundesliga club SG Braunschweig in the run-up to the 1993/94 season . Initially, he lived up to this reputation in the Bundesliga and was one of the best basket shooters in the league. However, it was not possible to integrate Yearwood as an outstanding individual player into the team structure. After he had only scored four points in two games in November 1993 and was accused of listlessness and refusal to perform, the Canadian and the Braunschweig team split up at the end of November 1993. Yearwood had achieved an average of 18.4 points in 14 Bundesliga appearances for Lower Saxony.

In the 1994/95 season he played for Apoel Nicosia in Cyprus . In the run-up to the 1995/96 season he stayed with the then new NBA team Toronto Raptors , but was removed from the squad in mid-October 1995 and thus before the start of the season.

He strengthened the Swiss national league team Vevey in the closing stages of the 1997/98 season and was subsequently committed by the team for the 1998/99 season. At the end of January 1999 Yearwood moved within the National League from Vevey to Geneva-Versoix.

After the end of his playing time, Yearwood was coach. He was appointed head coach of the basketball team at Dawson College in Westmount in his home country , and he also worked as a selection coach for the Basketball Federation of the Province of Québec . In 2019, Yearwood was appointed to an advisory board for a youth round of the NBA in Canada.
