William Waynflete

William Waynflete (* around 1395 in Wainfleet , Lincolnshire as William Patten , † August 11, 1486 in Bishop's Waltham , Hampshire ) was an English bishop and Lord Chancellor .

Life

In 1429 he took over the management of Winchester College and in 1442 that of Eton . In 1447 he became Bishop of Winchester . A year later he founded in Oxford , the Magdalen College , which was the university the most important liberal arts institution. In 1450 the Crown commissioned him to put down the Cade Rebellion, and in 1456 he became Lord Chancellor of England . In 1460 he had to resign from this office.
