THE WEAVING | Museum Oederan is a collection on Saxon weaving history in the small Saxon town of Oederan .

The museum has an exhibition space of around 1,000 square meters and an archive and museum fund of around 690 square meters. In addition to the weaving history, it shows the history of the city of Oederan and the history of the districts. The house is operated by the city of Oederan.

History of the museum

The Oederan weaving museum emerged from the local history museum (formerly objects from the antiquity exhibition) of the city of Oederan and the “historic hand weaving ” workshop .

The antiquity exhibition was a unique display of traditional city goods. It took place in October 1909. In 1909 the one-time exhibition became a permanent inventory of a local museum.

The Oederaner Bürgerverein ran the local history museum for several years. In 1925, the association gave the facility away. The town of Oederan became the new owner on January 1, 1926. From 1932 to the mid-1950s, the museum was on the third floor of the Oederaner town hall.

In 1959 the Oederaner Heimatmuseum was merged with the municipal "Museum for Workers' History". The expanded exhibition was moved to a new location on the Altmarkt (Pfarrgasse 5). Visitors were able to see a weaver's room, a cigar- making room, a Biedermeier room , a craft and guild room , a pewter and copper collection and five rooms on the socialist era and the history of the workers on around 330 square meters . A geological department was added in October 1965 .

After several stages of expansion, the museum was divided in the mid-1980s into Oederan in the Middle Ages , Weberstube, Oederan in the 17th and 18th centuries, bourgeois life and democratic movement in the 19th century, the beginnings of the Oederan workers' movement, Oederan in the November Revolution and the revolutionary post-war crisis , Struggle of the Oederaner workers under the leadership of the KPD for the defense of the rights of the working people and against the fascist danger 1923 to 1933, Night of fascism over Oederan, memorial corner for the communists and resistance fighters Johannes Mosch and Oederan from 1945 to 1980.

After the German Democratic Republic joined the Federal Republic, the exhibition was revised. It was now based on aspects of association, craft and industrial history.

At the end of the 1990s, the museum building no longer met modern standards. The city was looking for new spaces. After an unsuccessful search, a new building next to the town hall was decided in 2000. The city information, the city archive and the "historical hand weaving" should also be included in the new building.

In 2003 the future museum was named web MUSEUM OEDERAN . It thus committed itself primarily to the history of the Ore Mountains textile industry . It officially opened on January 26, 2004.

Permanent exhibitions

Weaving history

The area of weaving history begins with information on the settlement of ribbon and braid weavers in the Ore Mountains and the history of the city's cloth makers and weavers' guilds in the 15th century. The museum complex traces the development of this trade and industry up to 1990.

In the center of this museum complex is the "historical hand weaving". Here the museum relies on information that can be experienced in practice. It teaches the production of weaving yarn from wool and linen, the winding of warp and weft material on the winding wheel and machines from different eras, the warping and treeing of warps for the looms and tools in different weaving techniques.

The museum's holdings include simple high looms, flat looms with counter-tension, spring-tension and counter-marching devices from the former Oederaner hand weaving mill Simon and through new acquisitions. You can work on the jacquard loom and the dobby. The hand-weaving department is characterized by the most varied types of hand-looms.

As a completely new area, the mechanical looms in the training workshop of the Oederan linen union were reconstructed and installed in the weaving room. The development of weaving technology from 1920 to 1976 can be seen on the devices from this former factory. Three looms are made in Saxony and work with shuttle weaving technology. Two looms come from the Czech Republic. With them, the weft thread is inserted with compressed air. With this technology, an entire weaving department, the winding, was saved. In the museum's mechanical weaving mill, a Schönherr Oberschläger, a shovel shaft machine, a TES 4200 weaving machine and jet weaving machines can also be shown. With the latter, bed linen fabric was manufactured in the Oederan laundry union until 1992.
