Weertman Island is an island off the Loubet coast of Graham Land in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is the largest and southernmost of the Bennett Islands in Hanusse Bay .
Aerial photographs of the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948) and the British Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1956–1957) were used to map them. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1960 after the US geophysicist Johannes Weertman (1925-2018), who in 1951 had put forward a theory on glacier dynamics .
