Wehber's watermill is part of a building complex in Himmelpforten in the Stade district , which consists of the former watermill and Wehber's mill as a four-story windmill in the style of a gallery dutchman . The watermill was built in 1739 and used until the middle of the 20th century. The former mills are among the landmarks of the place and are under monument protection .

history

The watermill goes back to the "Wassermühle am Beek", which was probably built in the 14th century and belonged to the Himmelpforten monastery, founded in 1250 . In 1653, the monastery bailiff Michael Wehber received the water mill as a fief . Back then , the mill was closer to Heerstraße , which is now a federal highway . After the mill was demolished, it was rebuilt in 1739 at its current location on the weir . The basis for the operation of the water mill was the storage right on the Mühlenbach, which was a right granted by the sovereign . The oldest existing document is an inheritance letter from 1840. In the years that followed, the law was repeatedly set up or supplemented.

In 1935 the weir and drive wheels of the water mill were destroyed due to a flood. The watermill only had a single grist for grinding the grain and one for the production of fine wheat and rye flour, and in summer the water level was often too low to operate the water mill. Therefore, in 1871 it was decided to build Wehber's mill as a windmill . In 1958, the stowage right was temporarily canceled by contractual arrangements between the Kuhlaer Wassergenossenschaft and the mill owner, so that operations were discontinued.

The watermill has been owned by the Wehber family for centuries and is looked after by Hans Wehber and his son Wilhelm Wehber in the 12th and 13th generation. The listed premises are now used as storage space for the garden and home improvement store Wehbers Mühle, which also includes a restaurant in the former windmill.

The Niedersächsische Mühlenstraße leads past the former water mill.
