The Wehrmacht diesel locomotives of the type WR 220 were shunting locomotives for the German Air Force . The type WR 220 B had two axles, the type WR 220 C three. Both versions were manufactured by Deutsche Werke Kiel (DWK).

Deviating from the standard shunting diesel locomotives of the type WR 200 B 14 (later V 20), the WR 220 with 220 hp were somewhat more powerful, had a mechanical power transmission and differed visually with a shorter length and a larger driver's cab.

38 locomotives of the 220 B were built and six of the 220 C.

The Deutsche Bundesbahn took over 14 of these locomotives as class V 22 , whereby V 22 001 to 009 were two-axle and V 22 015 to 019 three-axle. The last three were only re-registered and were never used by DB. Some locomotives came to works railways.

The nine two-axle locomotives were brought into line with the V 20 series between 1951 and 1953 through the installation of a hydraulic power transmission and new engines with 200 hp and redrawn as V 20 051 to 059. The three-axle locomotive V 22 015 was converted into a two-axle locomotive and numbered as V 20 060. It differed in its dimensions from the locomotives with the numbers 051 to 059; it had the smaller drive wheel diameter of the three-axle vehicle with 900 mm and a length of only 7,400 mm. The remaining three-axle vehicles were not converted and were taken out of service until 1951.

In 1968 the locomotives were redrawn as 270 051–959. The converted locomotives were in use until the late 1970s. One locomotive each has been preserved at the Braunschweiger Verkehrsfreunde and the Mannheim Historical Railway.

The V 22 100 locomotive built by Deutz was not part of the series built by DWK .
