White Cross ( Japanese ヴ ァ イ ス ク ロ イ ツ , vaisu kuroitsu ) is a project by the voice actor Takehito Koyasu . In 1997 he formed the group White , together with other voice actors, whose roles and plot were subsequently developed. In the same year radio appearances, photo albums, CD radio plays, a manga and in 1998 an anime followed .

action

White is a group of four hit men who, on behalf of Persha, kill people who cannot be punished by the law. All members of White have had a traumatic experience in their past that brought them to White. As a camouflage, the four run a flower shop in Tokyo .

As a kind of "opposite" to white there is the group black, which works exactly against the goals of white and thus represents the hostile group. The members of Schwarz came to their group through a traumatic experience.

Characters

The members of white :

Ken Hidaka, code name Siberian
murders the victims with his gloves, from which he can extend a kind of cat's claws (bugnuks). He came to White after critics saved him when his best friend at the time , Koichiro Kase , destroyed his football career and wanted to kill him. In spite of everything, Ken is a very happy, open and optimistic person and since he is still so infatuated with football, he likes to train the kids from the neighborhood.
Omi Tsukiyono / Mamoru Takatori, code name Bombay
is the computer genius of white. He was kidnapped in his childhood and suffered trauma from his father not wanting to pay the ransom. He was saved by Persha. He thinks Persha is his uncle, his girlfriend Ouka is actually his sister and Reiji Taktori is his father. When he is supposed to kill his brothers on a mission, he lets them go and gets into a crisis, but chooses white. Ultimately, however, it becomes clear that not the gang boss Takatori, but Persha is his father. His real name is Mamoru Takatori. He prefers to fight at long range. To do this, he uses darts that he can throw, such as a crossbow and a bow.
Aya / Ran Fujimiya, code name Abyssinian
came to white because someone ran over his sister Aya-chan . In the manga, however, there was an explosion and she was caught by a rock. She fell into a coma and since then Aya has been trying to take revenge on those who are to blame for his sister's condition. For this he took her name. He kills with a samurai sword ( katana ).
Yōji Kudō, code name Balinese
came to White after his girlfriend Asuka was shot. She was his partner when he was still a detective, whose loss he never really got over. Even so, he is passionate about flirting with women and supposedly only accepts jobs related to women. He strangles his opponents with a fine wire hidden in his watch.

Brad Crawford, code name Oracle
The leader of black. He has the gift of seeing the future and is very calculating. He either fights with his fists or with a pistol. It is known about his past that he took Nagi in from the orphanage and most likely trained him.
Guilty, code name mastermind
Schuldig has the ability to read minds and he can also communicate telepathically with other people and manipulate them. He is a very devious character who enjoys power over other people. He is always very loyal to Crawford. Nothing is known about his past either.
Farfarello / Jay, code named Berserker
How exactly he came to black is not yet known. He doesn't seem to feel pain. He has a thing for knives and blood, and seems to enjoy mutilating himself. This is based on an incident in his childhood when he learned that he was the illegitimate child of a nun. Ever since he learned this, the boy, who was until then deeply religious, hates God from the bottom of his soul. When he's not in a raging frenzy, he's a very quiet character.
Nagi Naoe, code name Prodigy
As a child, he lived on the street and was treated badly before being sent to an orphanage. However, Ken has to kill the nun who looked after this orphanage in a mission, which Nagi could never forgive him. A deep hatred of all humanity built up in him and he joined Brad as a child to get revenge on society. He masters telekinesis and works as a hacker. He is a very quiet character who looks much older than he actually is and likes to adorn himself with strange feathers.

Light novel

From July to December 1997, Tokuma Shoten published a light novel on White Cross with the subtitle Forever White in Animage magazine in Japan . It was written by Ken'ichi Kanemaki and illustrated by Kyoko Tsuchiya.

Mangas

The first manga White - An Assassin and White Shaman appeared in Japan from 1997 in individual chapters in the manga magazine Wings . The Shinshokan- Verlag published these individual chapters in 1998 in two anthologies. The texts are by Takehito Koyasu and the illustrations by Kyōko Tsuchiya. Egmont Manga & Anime published the anthologies, which together comprise around 190 pages, from November 2001 to February 2002 in German.

The second manga White Side B appeared from 2003 to 2007 up to chapter 31 in the Monthly Comic Zero Sum and from chapter 32 in the Zero Sum WARD. They were later published in five volumes by Ichijinsha . The texts are again by Takehito Koyasu and the illustrations by Shōko Ōmine ( 大 峰 シ ョ ウ コ ). This was published in German by Egmont Manga & Anime from August 2004 to September 2007.

Animes

From April to September 1998, the Japanese television station TV Tokyo ran an anime series entitled White Cross . The 25-part series, produced by the Magic Bus animation studio , was directed by Kiyoshi Egami and Kazutoku Tanahashi . The character design was created by Tetsuya Yanagisawa and the artistic direction was taken over by Takeshi Waki . The 25 episodes first aired from April 9 to September 30, 1998. The series has been translated into English and French, among others. A German version was released on DVD by Anime-Virtual in 2001 . The second and third episodes were classified as FSK 18.

In 2002 the follow-up series White Cross Glow ( ヴ ァ イ ス ク ロ イ ツ グ リ ー エ ン , Vaisu Kuroitsu Gurīen ) appeared on the television station Kids Station . It was animated by Studio Ufotable and directed by Hitoyuki Matsui . The character design and animation management was done by Toshimitsu Kobayashi . Both anime series have been released on DVD in Germany.

An adaptation as an original video animation was released in 1999 in two parts under the title Weiß Kreuz - Verbrechen & Strafe . It was produced by Studio Animate Film and Triangle Staff and directed by Shin'ichirō Kimura .

The background music for the first series was composed by Kishow Yamanaka . The opening credits are Velvet Underworld and Piece of Heaven , and the credits are Beautiful Alone and It's Too Late . In episode 10, Oh Mercy was also played.

In the second series, the background music is from Motoi Sakuraba . The opening title is Glowing and the closing title is Stone Roses except for the last episode where Tomorrow was used for it. In episode 10, Velvet Underworld 03 was also used.

In the OVA, the music is also by Kishow Yamanaka. No Reason was used for the opening credits and Mellow Candle for the credits .

The pieces mentioned were each composed by Kazuya Nishioka and sung by the group “White”.

reception

According to the German specialist magazine MangasZene , the anime series is not for “the faint of heart who want to enjoy the cute boys” , because the plot revolves around modern gladiator fights, prostitution and murder. As the series progresses, the series gains philosophical depth, the distinction between good and evil and the justification of violence are discussed. The German implementation was rather bad. The episodes were cut together and the dialogues were often translated freely and sometimes in a meaning-distorting manner. The picture quality is standard, the subtitles in the opening credits have grammatical errors.
