features

Imago

The moths reach a wingspan of 38 to 44 millimeters. They have wings colored in different shades of gray and brown. The forewings on the inner edge lack the clear scalene tooth typical of most species of tooth moth. The middle field of the forewings is more or less whitish in the form of a band and distinguishes the moth from the similar species dark gray toothed spinner ( Drymonia ruficornis ), Schwarzeck toothed spinner ( Drymonia obliterata ) and southern toothed spinner ( Drymonia velitaris ). The white banded toothed spinner differs from the particularly similar unspotted toothed spinner ( Drymonia dodonaea ) by a straight inner transverse line of the forewings, which means that the middle field is not constricted inward. The hind wings are monochrome white-gray to light brown. The palps are short, the trunk withered. The antennae of the males are double combed to the tip, those of the females are single. The head is thick and long, the abdomen is short with hair.

egg

The egg is hemispherical and green in color.

Caterpillar

The caterpillars are yellow-green with numerous small light spots and a white side stripe that is narrowly reddish upwards and broadly blue-green downwards. The head is colored bright green.

Doll

The doll is colored black and has four short terminal spines on the cremaster .

Occurrence

The species is widespread in Central Europe, but rare in some areas and absent in higher mountain areas. She lives in different habitats, such as B. in mixed forests, oak groves and warm slopes and leanings.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths fly mainly in one generation in June and July and in climatically favorable locations in a second generation in late summer. They visit artificial light sources , often not until after midnight. The females lay the eggs on the underside of leaves. The caterpillar lives mainly from July to September and pupates in a loose web on the ground. The overwintering takes place as a pupa. Occasionally this overlaps.

Food of the caterpillars

The caterpillars prefer to feed on the leaves of the oak ( Quercus ).

Hazard and protection

The species occurs in very different numbers in Germany depending on the region, is rare in some areas, but is not considered to be acutely endangered.
