The Weinaupark , also called short Weinau, is a park on the eastern outskirts of Zittau on the B 99 near the border with Poland with a valuable collection of trees and shrubs, the mid-19th century. Was built in the English style. The Zittau zoo is located on its premises, and the Weinau park stadium for 10,000 spectators , built in 1893/94 as a bicycle racing track with a wooden grandstand, is to the east .

history

The Weinau was acquired and parceled out in 1570 by the city of Zittau from a religious knightly order. Until 1874, the area at the mouth of the Eckartsbach was a moor as a result of the Neisse floods . The name is derived from three vineyards that stretched from the heights of Eckartsberg to the Weinau.

In 1802/1804 there was a peat graveyard along today's B 99 (Görlitzer Straße), in which 800,000 to 900,000 peat bricks were cut every year . First efforts to transform the upper area into a spa park were made between 1824 and 1826 as a result of springs found. It was not until 1848/1849 that a Mr. Brösel set up a “moor and mineral water bath in the Weinau” (bathing establishment) with restoration in the area of the Niederbergteich. From 1859, the draining of the Weinau began by creating moats and sluices at the Niederteich, which probably also led to the drainage of the Mittelbergteich, so that the Körnerwiese was created there from 1863. The design of the Weinau, as it exists today, was made from 1876, z. B. the wine pond was created and the Lesketeich fell dry. Since that year the bathing establishment with restoration also fell into disrepair, as the city baths had been opened 3 years earlier. In 1882, today's restaurant was opened in the park.

The Weinauallee, which leads from the west to Weinau, was only laid out at the end of the 19th century (1894) and was initially called Bismarckallee. The first beginnings of the zoo go back to this time. A report on the success of the release of nightingales in the same year for the purpose of settling in Weinau Park was dated December 2, 1895 . In 1902 the Weinau was the venue for the Upper Lusatian trade and industrial exhibition . In this context, rails were laid from Haberkornplatz to Weinau for an exhibition tram , which was dismantled after the end of the exhibition, but can be seen as the spiritual impetus for the Zittau tram , which was decided in 1903 .

Current

Several associations are currently active in Weinau, such as B. the Tierpark Zittau eV, the Hillersche Villa eV (with the film nights on the open-air stage) and the sports clubs VfB Zittau , HSG Turbine Zittau eV Athletics Department, TC Zittau-Weinau e. V. and Ostsächsischer Sportverein Zittau eV Department of archery.

In addition, the non-profit Weinau eV has set itself the task of promoting nature, landscape and monument protection as well as monument preservation in Weinau Park. In addition, the Weinau is to be further developed as an urban recreational area through various projects and campaigns.

In 2012, for example, a duck house in the style of the surrounding area was built. In the same year, after the completion of a landing stage, the gondola operation on the Weinauteich was enabled again. In 2014, an interactive tree trail was opened. There are also annual campaigns such as spring and autumn cleaning, “1. May - WEINAU ACTIVE “and the wine pond crossing. In 2012 and 2013, ice skating was also organized on the Weinauteich.
