description

Weingartia westii grows individually with spherical to flat spherical, gray-green to purple-tinged bodies and sprouts a little with age. With diameters of 6 to 20 centimeters, the bodies reach heights of 8 to 20 centimeters and have a thickened, wedge-shaped beet root that is up to 20 centimeters long. The 12 to about 25 ribs are flat and tubercular. The 10 to 20  thorns are protruding, thin and elastic. They are gray-brown to black, rarely straw-colored or brownish to whitish and 2.5 to 6 inches long.

The yellow, rarely white flowers are narrow, funnel-shaped and appear near the apex. They are 4 to 5 centimeters long and 3.5 to 4.5 centimeters in diameter. The elongated, spherical to teardrop-shaped fruits are olive to dark green. When ripe, they are thin-skinned, drying up, disintegrating or tearing at the sides or at the base.

Distribution and systematics

Weingartia westii is widespread in southern Bolivia in the Chuquisaca and Potosí departments at altitudes of 3000 to 3950 meters.

The first description as Gymnocalycium westii was published in 1957 by Paul Clifford Hutchison (* 1924). John Donald Donald (1923-1996) placed them in 1958 in the genus Weingartia . Synonyms are Sulcorebutia westii (Hutchison) FHBrandt and Weingartia fidaiana subsp. westii (Hutchison) Slaba .
