Egon Schäffer winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Egon Schäffer winery is a multiple award-winning winery in the Franconian wine region . The estate is located in the Volkach district of Escherndorf in the Kitzingen district and is in the middle of the village on Astheimer Straße.

history

The Schäffer family has been recorded in the wine town of Escherndorf since 1524. The family originally grew their wines in the Eulengrube vineyard , which is one of the oldest vineyards in Franconia. It was probably already built in 778. Around 1900 the company was run by the brothers Jakob and Ottmar Schäffer. During the Second World War , the production of the luxury food wine collapsed and almost led to the closure of the winery.

The reconstruction after the war was done by Hermann Schäffer and his wife Elvira. In 1972, however, the Eulengrube site was dissolved and the Schäffers' vineyards became part of the new, equally traditional, Escherndorfer Lump site . The Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP) was joined in 1974. In 1988 Egon Schäffer took over the estate from his father. As a Veitshöchheim viticulture technician , like his father, the designated successor Peter Schäffer completed his training in 2013.

Locations and wines

The Schäffer winery grows its wines in the locations Escherndorfer Fürstenberg , Escherndorfer Lump and Untereisenheimer Sonnenberg. The company only has around 3.5 hectares of vineyards, which is relatively small for the Franconian growing region. The wines, mainly Silvaner (44%), Müller-Thurgau (22%) and Riesling (15%), mature for a long time and are characterized by a relatively late bottling time. Furthermore, the estate has its grapes harvested by hand , and the steep slopes make this harvest inevitable.

The Egon Schäffer winery does not use cold fermentation , which has been widespread since the 1990s. The wines are guaranteed a long fermentation time, so that almost exclusively dry wines are produced. The wines are characterized by a complex aroma and a high degree of maturity. The annual bottle production is 25,000.
