The Emmerich Knoll winery in Unterloiben near Dürnstein is an Austrian winery in the Wachau wine-growing region in Lower Austria .

history

From 1825 the ancestors of Emmerich Knoll operated viticulture in Unterloiben. Already in the time between the two world wars, some wines from particularly good vintages were filled into bottles; Bottling has been standard at the winery since 1947. At the age of 14, Emmerich Knoll (born February 13, 1950) was integrated into the business by his father. The first noble sweet wine, a Trockenbeerenauslese, was pressed in 1983; Since then, premium wines have played a role in the winery - alongside the dry wines. Emmerich Knoll has been practicing grape reduction ("thinning out") since 1979. In the meantime, his son Emmerich Knoll (junior) runs the winery .

Operation, vineyards, expansion, varieties

The vineyard area is 20 hectares (as of 2015), it is planted almost exclusively with white grape varieties . Around 90 percent are made up of Grüner Veltliner and Rheinriesling , the remaining 10 percent are made up of the varieties Chardonnay , Gelber Muskateller , Blauer Burgunder and Gelber Traminer . The most famous wines come from the Loibenberg , Schütt , Kellerberg , Pfaffenberg and Kreutles locations . The wines ferment and mature mainly in large wooden barrels.

Saint Urban , after a painting by Siegfried Stoitzner , is depicted on the very distinctive label . The winery is a member of the Vinea Wachau Nobilis Districtus association . Larger quantities of the most important wines are stored in a rarity cellar, which means that mature Knoll wines can also be obtained directly from the farm.
