Gesellmann winery

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gesellmann winery in Deutschkreutz is an Austrian winery in the Mittelburgenland wine-growing region.

history

The Gesellmann family was first mentioned in a document in 1767 as a wine producer in Deutschkreutz. The winery became known under the management of Engelbert Gesellmann, one of the Austrian red wine pioneers, who planted Cabernet Sauvignon in the mid-1980s and experimented with barriques . The winery was one of the first in Austria to produce a top cuvée from international varieties.

The family business has been run by Albert Gesellmann since 1993. After international red wine varieties had initially played a major role for a while, Albert Gesellmann also began to think more and more of the potential of autochthonous Austrian grape varieties, especially the Blaufränkisch. In terms of wine style, Albert Gesellmann says he prefers strong wines with volume and stature.

The winery is a member of the Renowned Wineries Burgenland (RWB).

Locations, varieties

The vineyard area is 40 hectares (as of 2016), 90 percent of which are planted with red grape varieties , mainly Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon, but also St. Laurent , Pinot Noir , Merlot , Zweigelt and Syrah . Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc predominate among the white varieties . As rarities from Central Burgenland , the Gesellmann winery also produces high-quality wines ( Trockenbeerenauslese ) in suitable years, some of which are supported by the use of barriques.

The annual production in 2011 reached around 200,000 bottles; the most famous wines are the Cuvées Opus Eximium ( Extraordinary Work ) and Bela Rex (the name refers to the Hungarian King Bela IV. ). The top wine of the company has been the Cuvée G from the Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent varieties since 1997 . The premium wines also include the Blaufränkisch hochberc , with which Gesellmann won the Falstaff victory in 2008 . The premium wine Blaufränkisch hochberc Stockkultur comes from a vineyard on the Deutschkreutz Hochberg, which is cultivated with a horse using the old method of farming (“stick culture”) .
