The Prieler winery in Schützen am Gebirge is an Austrian winery in the Leithaberg wine-growing region in Burgenland .

history

Initially, the Prieler family ran mixed farming. Georg Prieler (1914–1972) focused more on viticulture as part of this economy. As early as the early 1950s, he was filling bottles with wines. His son Engelbert Prieler (born September 14, 1948) is one of the pioneers of Austrian red wine cultivation. After taking over his parents' business in 1972, together with his wife Irmgard Prieler, he converted the operation from mixed agriculture to a pure wine business.

At the same time as other pioneers such as Anton Kollwentz and Hans Igler , Engelbert Prieler introduced the international Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot varieties in the mid-1980s and demonstrated their potential in viticulture in Burgenland. While cuvées made from these varieties were subsequently highly valued, Engelbert Prieler promoted the Blaufränkisch in high quality as early as the early 1990s. In the white wine segment, the Pinot Blanc was already in focus back then .

When Engelbert Prieler was absent for a year in 1999 due to an industrial accident, his daughter Silvia Prieler, a microbiologist, took over the management of the winery. She established itself so well in this role that her father left the management of the company to her even after his recovery. Silvia Prieler experimented with St. Laurent and Pinot Noir, and together with other viticulture players she founded the association “11 women and their wines” and the Leithaberg association. She paid great attention to researching the terroir of the Leithaberg. After having headed the winery for several years, she withdrew again in order to be able to devote more time to her family, which has now been founded, and to her scientific research at the University of Vienna.

From the 2011 harvest, Georg Prieler (born September 1, 1984) took over the management. Before that, he had completed the Vinohak (a secondary school with a focus on wine) in Neusiedl am See, had completed many a vinophile exploration trip and had been in charge of the cellar at the Schützen winery for several years. He is still supported in the company by his father Engelbert Prieler. From the beginning, Georg Prieler paid particular attention to optimizing the regional typicity of the wines. The focus is also on the Blaufränkisch and Pinot Blanc varieties under his management.

Vineyards, varieties, geology

The vineyard area is 22 hectares (as of 2017), of which 60 percent are planted with red grape varieties ( Blaufränkisch , Cabernet Sauvignon , Merlot and Pinot Noir ). The focus of the company is on the Blaufränkisch, which expresses its terroir-shaped versatility in several facets: as a classic under the name Johanneshöhe, as a mineral Leithaberg DAC and as close-knit vineyards from Goldberg and from the Oggau Riede Marienthal. The Blaufränkisch Goldberg and Marienthal are the top wines of the winery. Geologically, the Goldberg location is characterized by mica slate and clayey loam. In the Marienthal vineyard, there is a high degree of shell limestone. The wines benefit significantly from Engelbert Prieler's selection of the best Blaufränkisch vines over the decades.

In addition, there is a single-variety Merlot under the name Schützner Stein. In the red wine segment, the winery also strives for high quality Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Prieler's wines from Cabernet Sauvignon are among the best varieties that are pressed in Austria

In the white wine segment, the winery has made a name for itself especially with the Pinot Blanc . Prielers Pinot Blanc is developed on the one hand as an upscale classic wine from the Riede Seeberg and on the other hand in the premium level as Leithaberg DAC Pinot Blanc Ried Seeberg and as Pinot Blanc Ried Haidsatz. Geologically, shell limestone dominates the Seeberg vineyard to a large extent, whereas lime and slate predominate in the Haidsatz vineyard.

Others

In 2009 the Prieler family was named “ Falstaff Winemaker of the Year”. The Blaufränkisch Goldberg was rated by Robert Parker as the first Austrian red wine with over 90 points. The Prieler winery is run as an organic farm.
