The winery with the single location Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner

The Saarstein Castle winery is located in the lower part of the Saar Valley , in Serrig . Only white wine is grown on the 11 hectares of the property , some of which is also sparkling . The winery is a member of the Association of German Predicate and Quality Wineries (VDP for short). Saarstein Castle was a founding member of the Großer Ring (auction ring) in Trier in 1908.

Locations

The winery cultivates approx. 11 hectares of vineyards in the single-site Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner, which is in the sole ownership, of some very steep vineyards on the Saar (→ steep-slope viticulture ). This location is characterized by the high proportion of Devonian slate in the soil. This offers the vines a preferred climate, because they store the heat during the day in summer and give it back to the vines at night.

Grape varieties and wines

96% of the vineyards are planted with Riesling . The rest is made up of the varieties Pinot Blanc , Pinot Gris and Auxerrois . The average yield is around 70 hectoliters / hectare. Around 90,000 bottles are filled annually .

Due to the geographical proximity of the vineyard and cellar, the grapes are quickly transported to the wine press and pressed as a whole cluster at low pressure. The must is pre-clarified using a filter and refined with bentonite . For the first barrel, the winery relies on spontaneous fermentation . The following barrels are inoculated with fermenting must from the first barrel.

The export share of sales is 60 percent.

history

The vineyard was laid out in 1828 by head forester Ebventure at the site that was previously called Primmenberg . Later ownership passed to the shipping company Hansen. His grandson Michael Hansen built the manor and from there managed the Trier-based transport company, which specialized in ore and building materials. In 1906 the construction of the villa, which now serves as the manor house, was completed.

After the turmoil of the wars, the Hansen family finally parted with the estate. In 1956 the property was sold to Dieter Ebert. Since 1994 the estate has been managed by the viticulture engineer (→ Geisenheim Research Institute ) Christian Ebert, who had been responsible for the cellar since 1989.
