The Weir Group PLC is a British pump manufacturer from Glasgow with around 15,000 employees in 70 countries.
history
The company was founded in 1871 as an engineering company by the brothers George and James Weir under the name G. & J. Weir Ltd. The Weir brothers made numerous far-reaching inventions of pumping systems, especially for the Clyde shipyards and the steam ships built there , e.g. B. Boiler feed water pumps and evaporators .
The company was first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1946 . The double-acting Weir steam pumps were used largely in series on British steamships. They could pump water , fuel , air and much more and were used until the 1950s.
The gyroplane manufacturer Cierva Autogiro belonged to Weir from 1933 to 1951, since 1944 he was with G. & J. Weir Ltd. merged. The latter had previously developed helicopters .
In 2005, the business with multi-stage flash evaporators for seawater desalination (Weir Westgarth) was sold to Veolia Environnement .
In 2010, Weir Minerals and KHD Humboldt agreed to collaborate on the marketing of high-pressure grinding rollers in mining.
In 2018, Weir Group acquired ESCO Corporation , a Portland , Oregon- based manufacturer of tools and power units for the mining and construction sectors, for $ 1.285 billion .
