Mark Weisbrot

Mark Weisbrot (* 1954 in Chicago ) is an American economist and publicist. With Dean Baker , he runs the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), a left-liberal think tank in Washington, DC. As a commentator, he contributes to the New York Times , The Guardian and Folha de S. Paulo, among others .

Weisbrot has been at the University of Michigan doctorate ( Ph.D. ). He is considered a major architect of the Bank of the South , which on the initiative of Venezuela founded Argentina , Brazil , Paraguay , Uruguay , Ecuador , Bolivia and Venezuela . The Venezuelan government contacted him on various occasions as an advisor to help set up the bank. Weisbrot's work on Latin America received attention in the United States and beyond. He was invited as an expert by the US Congress Committee, among other things, to assess the Argentina crisis .

For the documentary South of the Border by Oliver Stone Weisbrot wrote with Tariq Ali the script. His study on the economic crisis in Latvia also became famous.

Weisbrot is also president of Just Foreign Policy , an initiative that promotes changes in US foreign policy .
