Weissküferei
Weissküferei is a historical, traditional Swiss trade and describes the manufacture of various tools for dairy and alpine farming from local woods such as light maple or spruce . The white cooperage presumably originated at the beginning of the 19th century , until 2008 it was an apprenticeship in Switzerland.
Origin of name
The part of the name "white" comes from the light wood that is used to manufacture the equipment. " Küfen " describes the production method. The name Weissküferei has been known in documents since 1696, when the Walser farming family Ambühl produced the first known Davos wooden wheel clock.
A Weissküfer is also known as a Weissbinder or Dealbator .
job
The job title Weissküfer / in was valid for the apprenticeship profession in Switzerland until the end of 2008, after which it was incorporated into the job description of the woodworker . The training lasted three years. The current apprenticeship as woodworker combines the previous professions as wood turner and white cooper.
In the white cooperage, various tools for dairy and alpine farming are made from local woods such as light maple or spruce. Weissküferei specializes in products with rounded, curved or curved shapes. When manufacturing containers, white coopers cut the wood into specially shaped wooden boards ( staves ). They join these together and form round or oval dishes and containers. The staves are held together by self-made wooden hoops made of maple . After the raw containers have been made, the elaborate carving decoration begins by hand.
Products
The traditional Weissküfereiprodukten include, for example: mobile bucket, butter churn , butter model , sour barrel, Brente, Motteli, milking stool , Scots bucket ( whey bucket ), Tragreff and cheese dishes.
Current situation
Around 80 smaller traditional businesses still exist in Switzerland (as of 2013). They usually offer a specialized range of products. The wooden equipment has remained unchanged in terms of shape and is richly decorated and fulfills its task in everyday life in the dairy . Nowadays, kitchen utensils and furnishings, gifts and souvenirs are also part of the Weissküfer range.
