The Welch Mountains are a dominant group of mountains with heights of up to 3015  m in the Palmerland on the Antarctic Peninsula . They rise about 40 km north of Mount Jackson on the eastern edge of the Dyer Plateau . The highest point in the western ridge is Mount Acton .

Presumably, the mountains were first spotted in 1935 during a flight over by the American polar explorer Lincoln Ellsworth . The northern foothills were mapped in 1936 during an exploration by dog sledding as part of the British Graham Land Expedition (1934–1937) by the Australian polar explorer John Rymill . In 1940, scientists from the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) carried out land and aerial surveys. The United States Geological Survey carried out the detailed mapping in 1974. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1971 after Rear Admiral David Fife Welch (1918-2005), commander of the United States Navy Support Units in Antarctica from 1969 to 1971.
