Weldra

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Weldra is a white wine variety . The new breed was presented by Christiaan Johannes Orffer. It is a cross between the Chenin Blanc and Trebbiano Toscano (also called Ugni Blanc) varieties. In South Africa approx. 100 hectares are planted with this variety (status 2001).

The high-yield variety Weldra was specially bred for warm climates with intensive artificial irrigation and the associated necessary rot resistance. These conditions are common in South Africa. It also shows good resistance to the fungal disease powdery mildew . However, it produces neutral wines with high acidity . The white wines are therefore often used for distillation.

The Weldra variety is related to the Chenel variety because they were bred from the same parent pair.
