The Brown Fish Owl ( Ketupa zeylonensis or Bubo zeylonensis ) is a species of bird from the family of authentics owl (Strigidae).
Appearance
The wave breast fish owl has a body length of 50 to 58 cm. The upper parts of the plumage are red-brown with black or brown line drawings. On the underside of this Fischuhu has delicate, wavy horizontal bands. The throat is white, the eyes are yellow and it has conspicuous feather ears . Its legs are completely featherless.
distribution
The wave breast fish owl is represented as a breeding bird in most regions of tropical southern Asia. It can be found from Turkey to southern China . Compared to the other Fischuhu species ( Sunda Fischuhu and Himalaya Fischuhu ) it is the most widespread. A new study of the westernmost population (previously K. z. Semenowi ) comes to the conclusion, based on initial bioacoustic and genetic findings, that semenowi may represent a species of its own. This would then be one of the rarest bird species on earth.
Habitat
The habitat of the wave-breasted fish owls are open forest areas and they always stay near water. In Sri Lanka it occurs up to an altitude of 2,000 meters; in Indochina , on the other hand, it tends to stay on the wooded river banks of the inland, as the Himalayan fish owl is represented here on the mountain rivers, which is absent in Sri Lanka.
Brood
The clutch of the wave-breasted Fischuhus consists of one or two eggs that are either laid in the old nest of another bird or in a rock niche. The eggs are incubated for up to 38 days and the young fly out after about seven weeks.
behavior
The species is nocturnal; Fish and frogs are the most important components of the diet. In addition, small mammals, birds, snakes , frogs , crabs and sometimes insects are also captured.
Like all other fish owls, the wave-breasted fish owl hunts from a tree trunk or branch that protrudes over the water. He preyed on fish by sliding down and grabbing the fish with his claws on the surface of the water. The call is a soft huphuphuphuphuphup or a loud huhuhuhuhuhuhu .
