The Fischuhus ( Ketupa ) are a kind of birds from the family of the real owls . The assignment of the species of this genus to the genus of eagle owls ( Bubo ) made by König and Weick is not generally accepted.

features

Fischuhus are similar to the diurnal ospreys and the African fish owls adapted to catching fish. In their size, color and body structure they correspond to the other eagle owls, but their catches are featherless and have teeth on the lower side so that they can catch slippery prey. The claws are long and very sharp on the underside, the legs themselves are also remarkably long and (with the exception of the giant fish owl ( Bubo blakistoni )) also bare. The plumage is less soft because the noiseless flight does not play a role when fishing. The facial veil is also less developed, since channeling the noises does not play a major role for visual orientation.

Way of life

Although the three species of Fischuhus occur in climatically very different areas, they still have very similar demands on their habitat. For their hunting they need water with wooded banks for their sitting areas. The distribution areas do not overlap.

species

The genus includes three types. The giant fish owl is not part of the genus Ketupa , despite its name that sounds like this.
