The eagle owl ( Bubo ) are a bird genus from the family of authentics owl (Strigidae). According to molecular biological findings, the snowy owl ( B. scandiacus ), formerly in the genus Nyctea , must also be included in this genus. The assignment of Fischuhus ( Ketupa ) to this genus made by König and Weick is not generally accepted.
Appearance
The eagle owls are large owls that have powerful claws and - apart from the snowy owl - striking feather ears. The legs and toes are feathered in some species, glabrous in others. Most pronounced are feathered legs and claws in the snowy owl. The largest species is the eagle owl , which also occurs in Central Europe , the largest subspecies of which is the Siberian eagle owl ( B. bubo sibiricus ) that lives in Siberia and can reach a body length of over 80 cm and a wingspan of up to 1.80 m.
distribution
With the exception of the southern polar region as well as Australasia and some Pacific islands, eagle owls are common worldwide. The genus is common with most species in Asia and Africa . In Europe only the eagle owl ( B. bubo ) and in the far north the snowy owl ( B. scandiacus ) occur. The only two purely American species of Great Horned Owl ( B. virginianus ) and Magellanuhu ( B. magellanicus ) are more closely related to the snowy owl, which also occurs in North America .
The different eagle owl species inhabit a multitude of different habitats. These include tropical rainforests , tundras , boreal forests , deserts , mountain regions and mangrove thickets. The only requirement for a habitat settlement is a few trees or ledges in whose protection they can breed and rest.
