The Bengalenuhu ( Bubo bengalensis ), also called Indian eagle owl, is a species of bird from the genus of eagle owls ( Bubo ) within the family of real owls (Strigidae).

The Bengal uhu reaches a body size of 50 to 56 centimeters with a wing length of 36 to 39 centimeters (males) or 37 to 42 centimeters (females). The weight is about 1100 grams. The back plumage is yellow-brown with a conspicuous black pattern. The ventral side is lighter brown and black-brown, often a white stripe runs over the shoulder.

The face is emphasized by the plumage above the eyes, which starts white in the center and becomes a black line directly above the eyes that ends in the tufts of ears. The face itself is light brown with black spots, the number of which increases towards the forehead. The eyes are orange-yellow to orange-red, the beak greenish to black and the chin and throat are white.

The head and tail of the animals are yellow-brown with brown-black stripes, the undersides are lighter and become white at the points of attachment. The legs and toes are feathered beige, the toes themselves bare and green-brown with black claws.

Habitat and Distribution

The distribution area of ​​the Bengalenuhu covers a large part of the Indian subcontinent from the West Himalayas via India, Nepal , Kashmir , Assam and Burma . He prefers stony semi-deserts with open vegetation. He is also known as a resident of older mango plantations near human dwellings.

Way of life

The Bengal uhu usually hunts from a hide , but sometimes it also flies close to the ground in search of prey. He mainly preyed on rats and mice as well as birds up to the size of a peacock . Other prey animals are reptiles , frogs , crustaceans and large insects .

The breeding season usually lasts from February to April, but can vary greatly locally due to the different climatic conditions. The nest is a shallow pit that is protected between rocks, on a sand bank in the river, under bushes or in other inaccessible places.
