The Wellsee ( Slavic for alder lake ) is a lake in Kiel between the districts of Elmschenhagen , Kroog , Rönne and Wellsee . He is since 1994 part of the conservation area, Wellsee and Wellsau lowlands , and was created by the rise in sea levels after the last ice age .

The river Schlüsbek flows into the Wellsee and the Wellsau (also: Wilsau or Neuwührener Au ) flows out of it. From there, the lake water passes through the Schwentine the Baltic Sea .

In the first half of the 20th century, Wellsee was still used as a bathing lake for residents of the surrounding districts; However, due to the poor water quality, bathing is prohibited today. Nevertheless, the area around the lake is a popular local recreation area. In severe winters, it forms a center for ice skaters from all the surrounding districts, especially Elmschenhagen and Kroog.

Various - also rare - water birds live in the extensive reed areas on the shore of the lake. Since the late 1950s silted lake in some peripheral areas. In the middle of the lake there are underground spring holes up to 20 meters deep, through which heated deep water rises. When the ice cover is closed, these hot spots are visible through watery shimmering circles in the ice. It is assumed that there are underground connections to surrounding lakes, e.g. B. the Tröndelsee and the Langsee .

The lake is leased by a conservation association. Fishing is prohibited for non-members, no permits are issued. Fish poaching (black fishing ) is prosecuted by the association.
