With the World Exhibition of Photography Lucerne was in 1952 in Lucerne under the initiative of Bucher CJ Verlag AG, the publisher of the magazine photo camera , something like the forerunner of the World Exhibition of Photography implemented in the 1960s and 1970s. The exhibition took place from May 15 to July 31, 1952. The patronage was the UNESCO, the Federal Council of the Swiss Confederation and the Government Council of the canton and the city of Lucerne. Lucerne journalist and photographer Max A. Wyss was the main secretary and co-initiator of the exhibition . Industrial and architectural photographer Otto Pfeifer was also on the organizing committee .

The exhibition wanted to give the general public an overview of photography. The topics of the exhibition were therefore widely spread and ranged from photography in research to amateur photography to fashion and art photography. The first recordings from space were also shown. It was the first comparable photography exhibition in Europe.

Many of the photographers relevant at the time were represented, from Brassaï to Robert Doisneau , Richard Avedon , Herbert Matter to Robert Frank . The landmark of the exhibition was a large photo tower which, however, also led to an enormous deficit of the event.
