Max Albert Wyss (born July 18, 1908 in Kriens ; † September 12, 1977 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss photojournalist and photographer .

Life

Max A. Wyss born July 18, 1908 in Kriens. After acquiring a secondary school teacher certificate at the University of Zurich , he studied Romance studies in Geneva , Neuchâtel and Paris . This was followed in 1931 by a one-year stay in Tanganyika (Africa) as a tutor at the Swiss consul. He then worked from 1935 to 1965 as a freelance journalist and photographer for numerous newspapers, weeklies and periodicals. During this time he also met Theo Frey , with whom he made several trips together. In 1952, as chief secretary, he was involved in the creation and success of the Lucerne World Photography Exhibition . In the early 1950s, he also caused a stir with his surrealist photo montages. In 1965 he married Zita Keller. In the same year he became editor of the photo magazine Camera and was in charge of the photography department at CJ Bucher Verlag , Lucerne. As an author, editor and editor he was also behind many picture books about nature that have been published by CJ Bucher Verlag. Max A. Wyss died in Lucerne on September 12, 1977.

The main work was created between the 30s and 50s and mainly comprises social reports in the Lucerne hinterland and Entlebuch (region) as well as Ireland . He often took photos together with the photographer Theo Frey . His photographs of Lucerne artists and American soldiers after the Second World War also carry great weight in his work. Wyss gained some fame with his experimental photographs , where he often worked with cross-fading of motifs.

His estate comprises around 50,000 images on negatives, slides and prints and is managed by the Foundation for Photo Documentation Canton Lucerne . In 2010, around 600 images were digitized in cooperation with the Lucerne State Archives .
