Space forces

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The term space forces denotes a part of the armed forces of a state that deals with military space missions .

The United States founded the United States Space Force in December 2019 and has been the only nation to have its own space force since then. Russia had an organized and independent space military force twice, first from 1992 to 1997 and then from 2001 to 2011.

The space treaty, which practically all spacefaring nations have signed, aims to prevent or limit the militarization of space.

history

Russia

In 1992, the Russian space forces were established as an independent sub-armed force within the armed forces of Russia , making them the world's first independent space force . In 1997 it was merged with the Strategic Missile Forces and spun off again in 2001. In 2015, the space forces were combined with the Russian Air Force to form the Air and Space Forces .

China

In 2016, the People's Republic of China founded the Strategic Combat Support Force as an independent branch of the People's Liberation Army responsible for space, cyber and electronic warfare.

United States

The development of military space travel within the United States began in 1945 with the United States Army Air Forces . Most of its space forces were later organized within the United States Air Force , which became the executive body for space travel in 1962.

In 1982 the Air Force created the Air Force Space Command , which combined all of its space forces into one command . Both the US Army and the US Navy have a much smaller number of space resources, which are centralized in the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command and the United States Tenth Fleet . The operational command for space missions is centralized in the US Space Command , which previously existed from 1985 to 2002 and was re-established in August 2019.

In December 2019, the US Congress approved the creation of the US Space Force , which was officially established on December 20, 2019. This new branch of the armed forces was founded out of the Air Force Space Command .
